The history of beautiful Skiathos begins from Prehistoric times with the Pelasgians as first inhabitants, followed by the Cretans and the Chalcedeans. It participated in the A’ and B’ Athenian Alliance and developed in shipping. Then followed the Byzantine and Venetian times, with violent pirate attacks, until its occupation by the Turks. Finally, it participated in the Revolution of 1821 with its powerful fleet and it was liberated. Years later it was severely damaged by the Italian-German invasion. Nowadays, Skiathos experiences a large development in the touristic sector due to its natural beauty and at the same time it offers high travel services.
