Carnival: If you visit Skyros during the carnival it is almost certain that you will keep coming back every year! You haven’t lived such an experience before! It is a combination of dance, different festivals and tradition. You will walk among the people that will be disguised as “old men”. They will be dancing and ring the bells that are attached on their belts.
August: In August traditional feasts are organized with the participation of the local dancing team. On the 15th of August, the traditional marriage of Skyros takes place and the people participating are dressed in traditional apparels. A good traditional wedding can have up to 40 brides and the groom must dance with all of them including his wife!
Festivals: Skyros can offer a wide range of festivals! The process is the same: goats and lambs cooked with rice or potatoes as well as dried fish are served for free. And of course plenty of white and red wine is consumed. These festivals are accompanied by traditional songs that are sung by the older and younger alike. It is a great honor to be chosen to organize the festival. You might be lucky and have the chance to watch the “baptism” during which somebody dressed up in white, dives in an outdoor tub in order to be cleansed. It is usually a humorous process.
Tip: Bear in mind that the festivals take place the previous night and not on the day of the actual name day!
