The castle is built on a 179-meters high rock and is a symbol not only of Skyros but also of the history of the island. The castle is of vital importance for every resident as the most significant historic events of the island took place there. It is said that the palace of Likomidis was built there and was also the location where the locals fortified themselves in order to be protected from the pirates and other invaders. The rock and the steep sides protected the castle that had only one entrance through which you can enter. You will see ruins of fortifications and walls from different historic periods: Pelasgian, Classical Age, byzantine, Venetian.
