In the west part of the island, 7km from Ermoupoli, lies Galissas, a charming village that has emerged as the prime tourist place of the island. Galissas is located on Argeftos Hill while its beach, the most popular and largest one on the island, is an impressive gulf and embraces the whole cove. Up on the hill and to the west of the cove, where the chapel of Agia Pakou is located nowadays, there was an ancient citadel and the most important classical and archaic center of the island-along of course with Ermoupoli-during the antiquity. This cosmopolitan village bustles with life during the summer because of the countless accommodations, campsites, cafés, bars, restaurants, traditional taverns, souvenir shops, grocery stores, sports facilities and events. It is recommended both for peaceful family vacations but also for intense fun thanks to the vitality of the night clubs and the local inhabitants. Those in love can enjoy a romantic walk to the harbor with the small boats and the wonderful stone pier or walk next to the palm trees and enjoy the sunset. You should definitely visit the cave, where the chapel of Agios Stefanos is located, either by boat or on foot. You should not miss the Wine Festival and the horse show that takes place here every year.
