Easter: According to an old custom, the Catholics and the Orthodoxs celebrate Easter together in Syros. On the Good Friday, they gather all together in the procession of the bier of Christ in the Catholic Metropolis of San Tzortzis (Agios Georgios). In Ermoupoli, people overflow the streets to see the biers of the Catholic and the Orthodox churches to roam together passing through Miaoulis Square accompanied by the choir of Agios Nikolas of the "Rich" and by the Orthodox Christinas holding objects that symbolize the Passion of Christ. On the Holy Saturday after "Christ is Risen", the Catholics carry the statue of Jesus in a cabin decorated with lemon blossoms, lilacs and violets.
29th July: The Festival of Agios Petros takes place in Kini. According to the custom, many boats full of lights approach the port of Kini and one of them carries the icon of the Saint. Then, there is a great feast with traditional delicacies, plenty of food, sweets, wine and local kinds of music.
August: August is the month dedicated to the great musician Markos Vamvakaris, since an event called "Avgoustiatika Feggaria" (The moon of August) takes place in Ano Syros. Musicians sing Rebetika in the taverns, bars and squares of Ano Syros every night during August, as part of an event dedicated to the founder of Rebetiko, Markos Vamvakaris.
15th August: The custom of "fotarides" relives in Kini. The locals with their families adorn their houses and alleys with lights, while the children decorate the benches and the beaches and light fires in tin cans. For those who love festivals, they should visit the island in July, September and October, the months with the most festivals of the year in Syros.
