The imperial complex of Galerius was built in the early 4th century AD and occupied an area of 35 acres with prominent points: the Rotunda, the Arc of Galerius, the Hippodrome and the luxurious palace in the eastern side of the city overlooking the sea. With the exception of Rotunda (a monument open to the public) and the Arch, the largest part of the Galerius Complex is located underneath the modern city and cannot be excavated. The Octagon and the palace on Navarinou Square are its most accessible parts, the colorful marble and mosaic floors of which you can admire while wandering around the busy pedestrian precinct of Navarinos, where pizzerias, creperies and student hang-outs are located.
