The bold church of Agios Dimitrios Myrovlitos has been the center of attraction for the far and wide visitors of the nymph of the Thermaic Gulf for centuries now. From this point, the patron Saint contemplates his beloved city, effusing his blessings during lean time but also during times of prosperity and making his presence felt through appearances and miracles. The current church was built in 1917, which resembles closely the older Basilica constructed during the 7th century. In its long-suffering history, it was burnt twice and looted several times, while it was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. During the Balkan Wars, after the liberation of Thessaloniki it operated again as an Orthodox church until the great fire in 1917, when it was burnt to the ground. Moreover, it is a five-aisled timber-roofed Basilica and includes as many tessellations, murals and architectural parts as were saved from the fire. Beneath the sanctuary of the church lies a crypt where, according to tradition, is the site of the martyrdom of the Saint, while in the southern part of the church is located the chapel of Agios Efthimios with wonderful murals dated from the 14th century and made by Manuel Panselinos. The relic of the Saint is located in a gorgeous marble ciborium in the northern aisle of the church in a silver feretory since 1978. In the church, apart from the Saint, you will also have the opportunity to worship the relic of Osia (Holy) Anysia, to get holy water from the well in which, according to sayings, the body of the martyr had been thrown (to the left of the church) and admire sculptures from different stages of its history in the exhibition, which is located down in the crypt. The church of Agios Dimitrios is ranked among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Last but not least, the pilgrimage of the Saint is definitely a grand blessing, but the truly unforgettable experience is the passion Week in the church of the patron culminating with the Resurrection, or and the vigil that occurs once a month in the place of the martyrdom (the crypt), for which you can be informed inside the church.
