Panagia Achiropiitos is the only Old-Christian church in the Mediterranean Sea, which is preserved close to its original form. Facing the imposing building on your way up Agia Sofia Street (immediately after Egnatia Highway), you will feel its whole remarkable history passing before your eyes. It was built in the mid-5th century as a three-aisled timber-roofed Basilica on the ruins of a Roman bath. It was embellished with wonderful tessellations and an embossed decoration designed in workshops of Constantinople. During the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque, while it has been operating again as a church since 1930. In its interior are preserved murals from the 13th century depicting allegories of the Christian paradise and full-length forms of martyrs. Wander around in the church; admire the wonderful tessellations, the marble flooring, which is its original floor, as well as the "theodosian ' chapiters decorating its two colonnades. This remarkable church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will definitely impress you both with its size and interior decoration, even though only a few specimens are preserved.
