The impressive church of Prophet Ilias has been situated in the northwestern part of the city (on the junction Olympiados and Prophet Ilia Street) for nearly 720 years. The church, which seems to have been originally dedicated to Jesus Christ, constitutes a specimen of the Palaeologian times’ architecture. It is a four-columned cross-in-square church with a central and six smaller domes and two niches in its northern and southern side. It is built by rubble masonry (with carved stones surrounded by bricks) and has a large narthex on the model of the monasteries in Mount Athos. In its interior, some murals portraying Jesus Christ’s life and miracles as well as the figures of Saints have endured. However, it is hard to date them due to poor preservation. While entering the church, you will have the opportunity to admire the Massacre of the Innocents, one of the few preserved specimens of iconography on the narthex, as well as the murals of the four chapels, dated from the 15th century. We should note that the murals of the church seem to have influenced the murals in churches found in Serbia.
