In a degraded area, between inelegant apartment blocks of the 70's emerges like in a fairy-tale the Byzantine church of Agii Apostoli at the beginning of Agiou Dimitriou Street. It was once the main church of a monastery, like Agios Panteleimon at Iasonidou Street and Agios Nikolaos Orphanou in Ano Polis. It is a four-columned cross-in-square church of the Paleologian era. It stands out both for its architecture (five domes, archways around the nave) and its tile-plastic decoration (rubble masonry) as well as for the wondrous tessellations and murals in its interior, works of the 14th century. Whether you visit it during the Mass or any another time, its elaborate tessellations, which will remind you of the Hellenistic art, its wonderful murals as well as the atmosphere of devoutness in the temple will carry you not only in another era, but also in another world.
