Today the Jewish museum is housed in one of the few surviving Jewish buildings after the great fire in 1917 and was built by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli. Thessaloniki was named “the Mother of Israel”, during the 16th century, due to its hospitality towards the Jewish refugees, expelled from Spain at the time. This hospitality continued until the outbreak of WWII, when the overwhelming majority of the Jews were ousted in Nazi camps. Today, five centuries later, the Jewish museum keeps the city’s Jewish history alive as well as the memory of the Jews in Thessaloniki. During your visit, you will discover aspects of the religious and everyday life of the Jews here in the co-capital city of Greece. Moreover, it includes a special gallery dedicated to the WWII genocide, which keeps alive the memory of 49.000 Jews, who were deported to Auschwitz during 1941-1943.
Opening Hours: Sunday, Tuesday, Friday: 11:00-14:00, Wednesday and Thursday: 11:00-14:00 & 17:00-20:00
