The monastery is situated in the northwest of Xanthi, in a forest at an altitude of about 150m. To date it is unknown when it was built. Its Katholikon is the most ancient monument in Xanthi and is dated around the end of the 9th century. The rhythm is a triconch Byzantine with a dome, and it seems like it has survived the earthquakes of 1829, contrary to the rest of the monastery which collapsed. However, the Metropolitan Bishop of the time, with the help of the people in Xanthi rebuilt it. Around 1907, with the initiative of the Metropolitan Bishop Sgouros and because of the damages at the east wing, it was rebuilt in order to be used as a hospital or orphanage. It was used as such when after the Asia Minor Catastrophe; it gave home to orphans who came here. However, this lasted until 1936 when it was turned into barracks. In 1974 after a big fire only the church and the icons were saved. The Metropolitan Bishop of Xanthi of the time, Adonios, decided to build on the ruins a modern building in order to be used for the further spiritual development of ambitious young men. Since 1974 this male monastery houses the Ecclesiastic School of Xanthi, which mainly offers ecclesiastical education.
