This significant archeological site was named after the merchant activities ("emporio" means trade) that took place in the port in days of the yore. It is located 5km from the medieval villages and the history of many centuries is buried in its hills. Findings dated from 3000 BC (sculptures, vessels, earthen utensils etc.), which are hosted in the Archeological Museum of Chios, revealed the existence of a fenced city and a temple.
The citadel, the most important element of the settlement, is a fenced place that has a mansion (the residence of the leader) and the temple of the Poliouhos Athena. Between the citadel and the settlement is located an open space, where probably all the inhabitants used to gather (market-place). The findings indicate that these buildings were used from the 8th to the 5th century BC. Moreover, the settlement consists of approximately 50 houses with cubic ground plan, whose roofs were tied on stone bases that are preserved up today.
