The church of Agia Markela Hiopolitida is located to the northwest of the island, near Volissos. Her torment and her effort to escape from her debauchee father shock the visitors even now. According to tradition, in order to save herself from her father, she hid in a bush. When he found her, he set fire to the bush and she ran to the sea. After she was wounded by an arrow, she prayed to Jesus to hide her in the rocks. But, her father caught up with her, decapitated her and threw the head into the sea. Holy water is said to spring from the spot of her martyrdom, a few meters away from the church dedicated to her memory. It can be accessed by following the trail. On the 22nd of July, many pilgrims visit this location for her feast day and the festival that takes place afterwards.
