The nautical history and the long Chian tradition in the maritime sector had to find a place worth of their significance in order to be preserved intact and to be widely promoted. The mansion house of the Pateras family, which was built in the 19th century and was given as a donation in 1991, was the occasion that fulfilled the undying desire of the Chians.
The Maritime Museum, fully equipped, provides comprehensive information about the course of the Chian seafaring through time. Its exhibits include navigation aids, ship models, which were ship built even before 1990, and some scarce photographs. You can also admire the work of painters like C. Kyladitis, whose collection includes some of the oldest sea pieces in the museum, and I. Nikolaidis. The valuable collection of Vrontados Improving  Refining and Sociable Union, which is also hosted in the museum, includes many works of Aristidis Glykas: long-quarterdeck cargo ships, which were built before World War I, ocean-going ships, scenes of sea battles and water colors depicted on paper, which unreel either in calm or fretful sea. All these displays represent the diversity of the museum. Opening hours: Daily 10:00-14:00 except for Sunday.
