On the roots of Propatios Mountain, you will see the Nea Moni Museum, which is hosted in an old two-storied cell in the Byzantine monastery. Its demodernisation has been completed thanks to a donation from Antonis Handris and has been open to the public since then. Because of two catastrophes that the Monastery suffered (the massacres of Chios in 1822 and the earthquake in 1881), the items exhibited have been reduced significantly. However, you will discover many treasures in its collection, such as post-Byzantine icons, telary works, ecclesiastical items and silverworks. A silk woven with gold and silver threads curtain known as "Pefki" will enchant you with its great artistry. Its makers and the date of its creation are mentioned on the woven dedicatory inscription: it was made by Chian craftsmen in 1742. This is a real object d' art that will draw your admiration.
