The second in population town of the regional unit of Achaea is Aegio. A town with an exceptional history proven by its rich archaeological findings, some of which are exhibited at the archaeological museum of the town. Based on mythology, Aegio was named after the aiga (goat) that nursed Zeus while he was hiding from his father Cronos.
Bustling, with all the characteristics of a big city, it covers the everyday needs of its people without losing its graphic element. The smell of the sea follows you wherever you are since Aegio is a coastal town with clean beaches at close distance. At the beach area the old raisin storages and papermaking factory remind us of the period when industry was high on development here, in the early 20th century. The railway as well as different preserved neoclassical buildings are reminiscent of earlier timers of development and prosperity offering a chance to the visitor of taking a different look on the town; that of a modern town of Aegio. Aegio’s central square is that of Ipsilon Alonion, crowded, especially during the summer months during which the square’s cafes are packed. The church of “Panagias tis Tripitis” holds a special place in the heart of Aegio. It is pierced inside a cave and build amphitheatrically to gaze at the Corinthian bay. For a goodbye the town of Aegio offers a taste of its sweet “rododaphne” (special brew of wine), made by the monks at the monastery of Taxiarches to sweeten us.
