A great temple in honor of Agios Antreas, patron saint of Patra stands majestic overlooking Patraikos bay. The temple was built on the site that the Apostle martyred. It is an imposing temple, one of the biggest in Europe with not only religious but also artistic interest. Next to it we find the first church erected in 1835 where the stone tomb of the saint also exists. Next to the old church lies the ancient source of the Goddess Demeter which was later the well of the Apostle. While descending the narrow stairs to receive the holy water one reads the phrase ΝΙΨΟΝ ΑΝΟΜΗΜΑΤΑ ΜΗ ΜΟΝΑΝ ΟΨΙΝ which is a palindrome phrase that was often engraved at sources and means 'wash sins, not just the face'.
