A mystifying journey begins as you approach the Mega Spileo which means great cave. Perched into the rocks at 120m height, can not help but to fascinate. In 362 AD the monks Simon and Theodore, in order to honor the icon of Panagia Chrysopiliotissa that had been found there, built a church and a few cells. With devoutness many pilgrims embrace the icon of Panagia beneath the wooden iconostasis and the frescoes that adorn the temple since 1653. The monastery, despite the disastrous human interventions resisted and still stands magnificent, with a wealth of relics, manuscripts and reliquaries.
