Chalkida is the capital of the island. It welcomes the visitor with its impressive drawbridge and the tidal phenomenon of river Evripos. Chalkida is located just next to central Greece, being a necessary stop for every visitor and a link between Evia and the rest of Greece. The city with its 60000 residents is full of life all year long. Chalkida has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era and its name came from the rich copper (called “chalkos” in Greek) deposits found in the area. Chalkida incorporates various identities (industrial, tourist, student, rapidly developed), combines everything and has everything. It has its own hospital, buses for all the island but also the rest of Greece, port, hotels, restaurants, seaside bars and commercial shops.
