Karystos is located on the most southern part of the island. This town of about 7.000 residents is a really hospitable place. A majestic city, one would say, with huge squares and streets, exactly as they were designed under king Otto in the 19th century. Karystos, favorite place of many prominent people, experienced a significant cultural evolution, being one of the first cities in Greece that had a museum, a library and exhibition halls. This development, in terms of culture but also of town planning, in combination with the port (providing routes to and from the port of Rafina), the beaches, the restaurants and the hotels established it as a popular touristic destination, especially during the summer season. The Venetian castle “Bourtzi” is worth a visit, while you could also go trekking to the mountain shelter of mount Ochi.
