The remnants of a castle with great history are located in the area of Dragona. The construction of the Coupa Castle started during the 8th century B.C., since it used to be a crowded district in ancient times. The area thrived till the 8th century A.D., when the Arabs arrived and destroyed the wall and the castle. Its name seems funny (“Koupa” is the greek word for “mug”), but it comes from the Italian language, in which means “neck”, because actually the castle was built as the “neck” of the whole location. The main characteristic of the castle is that it was constructed in a specific way, so that the path leading to the settlement would remain unseen. The isolated place offered security to its residents, who, however, also felt cut-off from the rest of the world. It is a quite difficult to get there, but the view of the wild nature and the ruins of different ages and cultures are worth it.
