The oldest church of the island is built in northwest Evia, south of Limni and west of Prokopi. It was built in the 7th century, on a cliff 200 meters above the sea, above the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of god Poseidon. This Christian temple is dedicated to Agios Nikolaos. Poseidon and Agios Nikolaos are the protectors of the sea and of the sailors. The feast days of the temple are on the 20th of May and 6th of December. The monastery suffered from many damages during the Turkish and the Frankish invasions, with Turks having killed all the monks. A captain from Galatas of Asia Minor (Instabul) restored the monastery after all the damages. This is where its name comes from.
