Folklore Museum of Chalkida is located in the Frankish castle Negroponte. Personally, I consider it to be the best museum of the island, something that you shouldn’t miss. It has three halls: In the first you will see traditional costumes of the island. In the second one, you’ll be found in a traditional neighborhood of Chalkida, in a middle-class house of the 20th century. The house is a true sample of the period, including all the furniture, decoration and utensils that were used back then. In the third hall you will see how farmers used to work, with a really realistic representation. The three halls of the museum used to be prisons, during the Turkish and the German occupation. Actually, this is where condemned – about to be executed - prisoners were brought, during the German occupation. During other periods, it was used as a warehouse. In 1981 it was granted to the Municipality of Chalkida to become a folklore museum, as actually happened.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 – 13: 00 & Wednesday 18:00 – 20:00
