Nearby the village of Asites, at an altitude of 480 meters amongst plane trees, cypresses and holm oaks, lies the monastery dedicated to Agios (St.) Georgios. This is also one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. The origins of the name Golgolaini have two versions: either after someone who could quickly fill ‘laginia,’ (a kind of large earthenware jug) with water, or metaphorically for someone who was willing to give generously to charity. The monastery played an important role during the Turkish occupation, as it was a base of the Cretan rebels. For this reason, it was destroyed by the Turks. The Holy Liturgy is conducted without the benefit of electricity, which gives the visitor a sense of returning to the past. Inside the courtyard is a Venetian fountain.
