Most likely you will hear this village together with its “neighbor” Sirrako. These two villages are connected with a 2 and a half kilometers path and are almost identical. They are entirely built with stone by the local craftsmen and are located amphitheatrically on the hill. Both villages are met in scripts by French explorers that date back to 1815. They describe them as developed villages with intellectual life as they both possessed libraries.
Although they had many advantages before the Greek Revolution, their participation in the war provoked the Turks that burned them in order to disable the passage from Thessaly to Ioannina. After 1913 and the liberation of Epirus, the residents that had previously fled to Eptanisa returned and as a result the villages grew once again but only until 1940 when World War II started.
Nowadays, the village is kept alive by its 30 residents. You will surely stop at the coffee house and hostel that is open all year round and is the meeting point of the village.
If you get to Kalarrites which is an excellent idea, do not miss the chance to follow the impressive hiking trail from Kalarrites to Sirrako.
