Aoos River starts from Northern Pindos, goes through a big part of the national park Vikos-Aoos and finally leaves the plain of Konitsa to end up in the Adriatic Sea.
From the 260 kilometers of its incredible route, only 70 of them are located on Greek territory. The first lake that you will meet along the river is an artificial one and was built thanks to a dam in the location of Pentalonia at an altitude of 1400 meters. With the help of Arkoudorema, a stream that supplies Aoos with the clear waters of Valia Kalda, it continues its course to the dense forest of Mourgos, which is under protection. After a short distance from its river bed, there is the village of Vovousa (=making a lot of noise) that is tightly connected with river that crosses it as it was named after the noise the Aoos River makes as it passes through. Here, you will also have the chance to see the fine, single-arched bridge that connects its neighborhoods since 1748. The other impressive bridge of Aoos is located just outside Konitsa and was constructed by Frontzos in 1870. From there you can follow a short hiking trail that will take you to the monastery of Stomio where you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the canyon of Aoos.
The river is also used for water sports, before its connection with Voidomatis it is ideal for kayak but only for experienced athletes. A bit further down and as the waters get more and more, Aoos is the perfect place for rafting.
All around Aoos River you will find lots of hiking trails through the unharmed nature that is “fed” by the river. In the past few years, there are tries to change the river’s course, something that will damage the balance and beauty of the area.
