Οccupying the northeastern part of the Peloponnese, it is named after the hero Korinth, himself a descendant of the god Hermes. A prefecture rich with natural beauty, dense forests, beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters, lakes, picturesque seaside and mountain villages, and a great past. The prefecture of Korinthia has been inhabited since prehistoric times and has experienced a great prosperity in antiquity, with the Ancient City of Korinthos, the Ancient city of Nemea and Akrocorinthos being focal points.
The region is so closely linked with legend, that sometimes traces of its history are lost in myth. Two of the four major religious observances/sporting events took place in the district’s cities of Isthmia and Nemea, attracting participants and pilgrims from all over the country. Today it receives many visitors from Attica, due to its proximity, and from the Peloponnese. Visitors who want to relax by the sea, enjoy the nature by exploring the mountain villages and forests, feel the splendor of antiquity by visiting the archaeological sites and also the Corinth Canal, a relatively modern feat of engineering.
Isthmia: The Isthmian games were held in honor of Palaimon, who drowned in these waters and was worshiped as a local deity. More precisely, Palaimon was Melicertis, son of Ino, stepmother of Phrixus and Helle. He died tragically when his mother, crazy, fell overboard into the sea, holding the baby in her arms. Participation at the games was open only to men, and the winners were crowned with wreaths made of pine branches.
Nemea or Nemeia: The Nemeian games were held in honor of young Ofelti, son of the king of the city, who died of a snake bite when his nanny left him briefly in order to offer water to the 7 Argive Generals who had stopped along their march against the city of Thebes. The Nemeian games, including both sport and religious events, was esteemed comparably to the similar festivals of Isthmia, Pythia, and Olympia (the latter of which you may have heard of).
