Men ahead of their time, many ancient rulers of Korinthia region dreamed since antiquity of cutting a passage through the isthmus to avoid the circumnavigation of the Peloponnese. Though this feat was not ultimately realized until the modern era, they did manage to come up with a reasonable alternative: An overland ramp by which it was possible to drag vessels across the isthmus. This was the Diolkos: a paved road 3-6 m wide, used to pull ships from the Saronic to the Korinthiakos and vice versa. Paved with limestone cube stones, it has 2 grooves in the middle spaced 1.5m part, and at the ends a stone pier. Today they have uncovered a total of 459 m from the path that was built in the 6th century BC.
