Famous for its tsipouro and the Bourani festival – an emotive custom in the honor of god Dionysus that takes place every Great Monday – the city of Tyrnavos still has lots of its traditional architectural characteristics although it is one of the biggest cities in the Larisa prefecture.
In its rich natural surroundings, the city is graced by the stone bridges, the rivers, the towers and the vegetation that give Tyrnavos a special characteristic. However, the city is quite modern accommodating the residents of the nearby areas.
The tsipouro of Tyrnavos is famous throughout Greece for its quality and special flavor. The area is lowland and full of vineyards, something that makes its wine famous as well. Since 1959, a wine festival is organized in Ampelonas and is attended by people from the whole Thessaly.
The city is also known for its carnival and especially for the Bourani festival that takes place every Great Monday. A festival that has its roots in the pagan worship of the god Dionysus and the gods of fertility and prosperity of the land.
