The hill of the Fortress is located next to the church of Agios Achillios. This point has been of vital importance for the residents of the area as not only the Fortress, the temples, the ancient theatre were built there, but also the religious centre of the city during the byzantine era. The famous “Bezesteni”, which has been preserved up to today, was built on the hill of the Fortress during the Turkish occupation. Furthermore, during the same period the only Greek settlement “Tranos Mahalas” was established on that hill.
Nowadays, the hill is a place for walking and relaxation. It has been renovated and is visited by many locals and tourists alike. Traditional taverns, cafes and stores are combined there with the hill’s rich history.
