By the time the visitor reaches Symi, he faces a unique settlement that spreads amphitheatrically from the sea surface to the hill peak. This settlement is one of the two biggest and best reserved traditional settlements in Greece; the other one is Plaka in Athens. Gialos is neoclassic, which is a result of the financial prosperity and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the island during the 19th century.
500 wide rock steps will lead you to Chorio, which is located just above Gialos. Kali Strata, as it is named, was once the only road that connected the two settlements and there were the shops and mansions of the island that were part of the most beautiful quarter.
When you go up to Chorio, by walking through such wonderful places, you’ll have the chance to wonder among the paved paths that lead to the Castle. It is built on the ancient citadel and only one part of the wall is preserved since the Germans exploded it during their withdrawal in World War II. However it is worth visiting the Castle and the Lady of the Castle, the church with the rare idols and the great view towards Pedi.
