The theater was designed by the Italian architect P. Sampo. Syros needed a decent theater that could host performances by the various troupes which visited the greatest cultural center of Greece back then. The building, which is said to be a miniature of La Scala di Milano, opened its doors to the public for the first time on the 20th of April in 1864, welcoming the viewers to the performance of "Rigoletto" by Verdi. Since then, it has hosted several historic performances and operas. Although its exterior is not something extraordinary, in its interior the Italian and French aristocratic patterns are quite evident. Red velvet on the seats, curtains and handrails and a fine-crafted ceiling mural of poets and musicians compose the magic that should be emitted in a theater. In "the Hall of Memories", you will see costumes, posters and the programs of artists who left their mark in "Apollon" Theater. It is the details of this historical theater that will thrill you and, therefore, you should definitely visit it. This is a place where history and culture are as plain as a pikestaff.
