The Byzantine Museum is housed in the Metzite mosque, which is dated from the second half of the 19th century. Even though, the restoration of the building fell behind, the museum eventually was opened to the public in 2010. Therefore, Chios obtained another one museum that presents the crucial historic times of the island.
Its exhibits are dated from the Early Christianity to recent times. Some of the findings displayed in the museum are: stone objects from the Genoan Empire, cast-iron or brass cannons of the 17th century (in the yard), sculptures and epigraphs. The mural, which is definitely worth mentioning, is the one that depicts the miracle of Agios Nikolaos, a masterpiece of Mihalis Homatzas (1734). Another exceptional mural is the “Scenes from the Massacres of Chios” made by Eugene Delacroix, an identical copy of the painting, which is included in the exhibits of the museum.
