Messolonghi is called “Ieri Poli” (sacred city), because bravery, sacrifice and the tragical scenes that took place inside its walls are unique in history. One place dedicated to the struggle of the free besieged is the Garden of Heroes, next to the Gate and the walls.
In the Garden you will see a tomb with remains of the warriors, the tomb of Markos Botsaris and other warriors from other historic moments, busts of locals and many more monuments from other countries.
Every year on the Palm Sunday the Memorial March ends in the Garden, where also the representation of Kapsalis blast takes place, reminding us of this heroic act. During the exit, Kapsalis decided to blow himself up along with all those who couldn’t participate in the exit, so that they wouldn’t get caught by the Turks.
Notice the monument of the decision about the exit outside the Garden and consider the dramatic moments that were experienced by the human existence.
