Just before reaching the harbor there is a windmill on a crossroad. It is a monument of freedom in the honor of those that preferred to die free rather than surrender to the Turks. It was built in 1962, in the exact position of the windmill in the revolutionary era, to remind the sacrifice of Bishop Joseph Rogon who entrenched there protecting the south side of the city, after the entrance of the hostile navy in the lagoon. When the Turkish fleet entered the lake, some men and the bishop got into the windmill and protected the southern side of the town. They fought from that windmill until the moment of the Exodus when they used their last gunpowder to blow up themselves together with the enemies that had surrounded them. The ruins of the original windmill were kept till 1880 when a café was built and then the windmill that exists up to today.
