There were lots of chapels on the rocks of Varasova built by the ascetics that lived there. In 1991, the diggings conducted by the professor of Byzantine Archaeology Athanasios Paliouras, brought to light very old treasures. A monastery inside the cave with two-story cells, three-story tower, a smaller cave with a grate, a small temple in the center, cemetery with thousands of skeletons. The cave of Agios Nikolaos of Varasova was used for centuries as a place for peace and pilgrimage. The discovery of a smaller cave above the bigger with a wooden stair and a dark room, where the ascetic lived, makes the monument unique. It is the only one in Greece. Another one has been found in Pafos and two or three in Egypt and Palestine.
