It is one of the four gorges we come across in the great rocky façade of southwestern Arakynthos, north of Messologhi. The gorge has an opening towards the lagoon of Aetoliko and can be seen while driving on the National Road as we pass Chaliki, after Kefalovryso and on the way to Kleisoura. The environmental characteristics of this gorge are similar to its neighboring gorge of Kleisoura. You can access the gorge through settlement of Kefalovryso, by a dirt road at first, and then a 20 minute hike. The gorge can also be approached from its upper side, from the settlement of Kato Ampelia, on the plateau of Ellinika. We can reach the settlement by a country road and then, after a brief hike, we shall come to a rocky balcony over the cliffs. This location offers unique view towards the complex wetlands of Messologhi, Western Peloponnese, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Xiromero.
In a cave on the vertical rocks of the gorge accessible by trails, we come across the chapel of Ai Nikolas (St. Nikolas). An important ascetic community of monks used to live here during the Byzantine and Ottoman period.
