The first half of the biggest tributary of Evinos, Kotsalos, is known as Kakavos. Its springs are located in the area of Ano Chora, Tsekoura and Omalia. There is an old trail that runs parallel to the river inside this gorge, connecting the villages Ano Chora and Ampelakiotissa. It is accessible, organized with signs and lasts about 2-2,5 hours, while it crosses a fir forest and groups of bushes and platanus trees. It passes through the old watermills in the area below Ampelakiotissa and the old terraces (calle “zagades” in the local dialect) that are cultivated by the villagers. A few mountain trout still inhabit the river, as well as the endemic in Western Greece chubs and Barbus peloponnesius, a species of ray-finned fish found only in Greece. Otters can also be seen in the area.
