Greece’s largest lake, which is located near the foothills of Arakinthos, is so big that looks like a sea and especially on cloudy days.
Lots of rare species of fish live in its waters, some of which like Trichonis dwarf goby (Economidichthys trichonis) and mediterranean sand smelt, you will taste in the local tavernas.
The lake is protected by the Natura 2000 program as it is house to more than 200 species of birds some of which are of course under protection. You might also get the chance to see an otter, an amphibious found more and more rarely in Greece and since it lives only in clean waters.
The water body of the lake is extended in a 96,5 kilometers long area and its maximum depth has been measured to 58 meters. Its 51-kilometer long coastline is graced with platanus, willows, poplars and bays.
Around the lake there are more than 20 villages most famous of which are the villages of Myrtia and Thermo. Getting around of the lake by car means covering a 70 kilometers long distance and you will find many points where you can go for a coffee, grab a bite or even have a swim.
The idea for a lunch by the lake under the tall platanus trees is ideal if you find yourselves in the area.
