Herons, little ergets and mallards are reflected on the calm waters of the lake; while once in a while they dive inside, seeking their food. The lake has uncountable residents; others are permanent and others pass by, making a stop here during their long migration journey. Lagoon boats (“gaites” in Greek), constructed especially for its shallow waters, cross by its natural seawater basins known as "divaria" in order to catch the famous Messolonghi sea bream. There are also “pelades”, the wooden cabins standing on stilts above water, mainly used by the fishermen exploiting the lagoon.
It is the largest lagoon in Greece, formed between the estuaries of Acheloos and Evinos. It covers 22.000 acres, the average water level is about half to one meter and gets to 5-6 meters in just a few points. The lagoon of Messolonghi has uncountable winged but also aquatic residents, is classified as Environmental Park and is protected by the Ramsar Treaty. The sea lake is crossed by the asphalt road to Tourlida, but there are also some vertical dirt roads if you wish to explore more of the lagoon. The water of the lagoon is also curative. This is why every summer you’ll see Agia Triada street, on the middle of the route to Tourlida, being flooded by bathers spreading beneficiary clay all over their bodies. In 25 March 1826 a heroic battle, with 150 defenders of the city crushing redundant enemies, took place in this little church that can be seen from the road.
So, you are going to cross the lagoon and reach Tourlida islet, which is nice for a swim, coffee, food or just contemplation.
Enjoy your walk around the lagoon, notice its residents and let it lure your look at the games and the reflections on its calm, silent waters.
