Karytena makes an impression as it stands out on the rocks, imposing and attractive. It was characterized as "The Toledo of Greece" by Nikos Kazantzakis. The beautiful Karytena, built on a bulge, with the river flowing zestfully below, has been declared as a traditional dorp, thanks to the atmosphere of the medieval castle, around which 19 Byzantine churches and the city are built. Karytena was also the capital of one of the 12 Baronies of the medieval Moreas. Kolokotronis' name is linked with this village too, and the habitants will be more than happy to show you what is left from the house, where he lived in. With its amphitheatrical view and the tile-floored alleys around the castle, it is one of the most favorite destinations for those visiting the area.
