The temple of Athena Alea was built in the 4th century BC and is one of the most significant and known temples of Classical Greece with an eminent position in the development of monumental architecture and sculpture within Greece. It was the most substantial sanctuary of Arcadians that was well-known and particularly respected by all Peloponnesians. It was designed by the sculptor Scopas from Paros and Pausanias used to refer to this temple with admiration.
