The temple of Apollo Epicurius seems to be lying in the middle of nowhere, but, when it was built in 430 BC, the most known town of the ancient world, Figalia, was nearby. The temple was built between 430-410 BC by Ictinus, the architect of Parthenon, which was one of the greatest and significant temples in antiquity. It was dedicated to Apollo by the Phigalians for helping them to overcome the Black Death. On the slope of the mountain, at approximately 1130 meters in altitude and 14 kilometers from Andritsena, the temple stands imposing evoking admiration with its perfection. The measurement of the temple is 38,24m by 14,48m and is of Doric order with some Ionic order's characteristics. On the exterior surface, it has a peristyle. The aspect of the temple is North-South contrary to all the other temples, whose aspect is East-West. This differentiation has led to a plurality of speculations and myths. Despite the fact that part of the temple's frieze, including the Battle of the Amazons, was abstracted in 1814 and exhibited in the British Museum in London, it remains one of the most well-preserved buildings of Classical Antiquity and the first one in Greece that was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1986.
