The historical monastery of the 12th century is located only 10km from Tripolis. According to tradition, the miraculous icon on the sanctum's chancel screen was found in this place three times, while some followers were taking it back to the temple of Agios (St.) Georgios in Tripolis. Therefore, the church was built here and, then, a monastery for nuns. Although its architectural style has deteriorated, the altitude of 1280m in which it is built, provides a breathtaking view to its visitors. It was the observation tower of Geros tou Morea (nickname of Kolokotronis, one of the leaders of the uprising in 1821), whence the rest fighters were informed with smoke signals about the mobility of the Turkish troops. Since it was the hideaway and the base of the Greek troops, it was looted frequently. It's one more monastery linked to Greek history.
