Typical for lots of monasteries in Evrytania is the surrounding scenery. As a result, the monastery of Prousos is built in beautiful surroundings on a steep rock and above a deep canyon that is run through by the river Karpenisiotis. It was established by the monks Dionysios and Timotheos in 829. They are said to have brought with them the icon of Virgin Mary of Prousa, which was painted by the Evangelist Loukas. There is, however, a story about this icon: a group of shepherds found the icon in a cave and no matter how hard Dionysios tried to move it, the icon kept returning back. On the way to Karpenisi there is a road where you will see a rock with seven footprints on it. They are said to be the footsteps of Virgin Mary on her way to Prousos. The monastery has a main body where Virgin Mary Prousiotissa is worshiped and part where the cells are located. The temple is cross-shaped and dates back in 1754 while the wall paintings created by Georgiou and Anagnostou date back in 1785. The icon was found on the 23rd of August which is also the date that the church celebrates. The silver cover of Virgin Mary was donated by Karaiskakis, who found shelter in the monastery as he was sick with fever. The two castles on its side of the monastery are the “Towers of Karaiskakis”. A museum is housed in the monastery with several exhibits such as icons dating back to the 15th and 16th century, religious apparels, silver and golden chalices, handwritten codes as well as the sword that belonged to Karaiskakis. The monastery was destroyed many times and the last one was by the Germans on the 16th of August 1944 because it was considered to be a shelter for the rebels. Opposite the church, there is the chapel of Agii Pantes that was built in 1754.
