The historic monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Tatarna is located in an evergreen area near the eastern bank of the lake of Kremasta.
The Holy Monastery can be accessed by the road leading from Karpenisi to Agrinio and through the bypass in Eastern Fragkista. It is 70 kilometers away from Karpenisi and 100 kilometers away from Agrinio (both roads meet in Western Fragkista). The scenery that is wild and impressive, full of pine trees and canyons on one side and mild, accessible on the other, atones the visitor.
In the old times, Karpenisi was connected with Valtos with the help of a very significant bridge: the bridge of Tatarna. It was a construction miracle dating back to the Turkish Occupation. Nowadays, it is deep down in the waters of the lake. A new bridge has been built in the same position just before the waters of the lake rise. The monastery had a yard and the temple of Agia Paraskevi (the festival of Tatarna took place there. It was the biggest festival of the western Sterea Ellada).
According to tradition, the establishment of the Monastery dates back to the 12th century and specifically in 1111. Now there are only some ruins left in the location of “Paliomonastiro” (=old monastery). The older ruins got muddled with the new during the landslide of 1963 and now it is impossible to separate the older from the newer buildings. The religious icon of “Akra Tapinosi” that dates back to the 12th-13th century comes from this older monastery and is kept as a heritage in the Monastery of Tatarna.
The name Tatarna or Tetarna comes from this older monastery. Although we are not entirely sure, it means a meeting place for people and animals. In Serbian it means a place with rich vegetation, which must be the best explanation.
Around 1600 the monastery took part in rebellious movements and specifically in the first of the two organized by Metropolite of Larisa, Dionysios, that was defeated by the Turks in 1611 in Giannena. After 1650, the monastery underwent a period of development with the help of Saint Eugenios Etolos.
The monastery was entirely destroyed in 1821. Until then it was looted, burned and robbed not only by the Turks but also by different groups of robbers that acted in the region. The most significant of all, however, is the destruction of 1821, when the monks together with the monk Kyprianos helped Odysseas Androutsos in the battle against the Turks that took place near the bridge of Tatarna.
The monastery was rebuilt in 1844, 500 meters south of the older location. After the landslides of 1963, the works for the new monastery started in 1970.
