According to legend, the name Kefalonia comes from the mythical character named Kefalos. There are many versions about his identity. Some say that he was the patriarch of the race of Kefalids in Attica, who helped Amphitryon, King of Thebes, in his campaign against the first inhabitants of the island, the Tilevoes, and for their efforts were awarded this beautiful island. There he married and had four sons: Kranios, Paleas, Pronnisos and Samios. The four siblings in turn each founded and a namesake city-state that together comprised the legendary Tetrapolis, traces of which survive today. Other versions of the myth take him for a son of Hermes or of Aeolus, exiled by the Supreme Court after accidentally killing his wife Prokrida, daughter of Erechthionas, in a hunt. The reason behind this tragedy was the Goddess of Dawn Eos who, being in love with Kefalos, had kidnapped him and thereafter bore him three sons. Prokrida, suspicious about the fidelity of her husband after this adventure, was spying on him during the hunt. Mistaking her for an animal, Kefalos killed her with a magic spear, gift of the goddess Artemis, that could never miss its mark.
