When the conversation turns to lakes in Kefalonia, the ultimate lake is the fairytale cave-lake of Melissani. The cave-lake of the Nymphs, as it used to be called, is a real gem and undoubtedly the most enchanting attraction on the island. The crystalline waters range in depth from 10 to 30 meters, without losing their transparency. It was discovered by speleologists in the 1950s, but the stalactites that decorate its walls betray its true age, which is estimated at 16,000 to 20,000 years. The unique spectacle that is offered to visitors is due to a large earthquake, during which much of the roof caved in, creating a huge dome where sunlight pours in. The green and blue colors the sun's rays give to the crystal clear waters testify to the past of this magical microcosm. In ancient times, according to findings from the small island located in the lake, the area was sacred to the goat-footed god Pan and his retinue of beautiful girls, the Nymphs. Take a memorable ride on one of the many boats designed for this purpose. Midday is the perfect time for a visit, when the sun creates a curtain of other-worldly rays, offering a unique setting. Due to the multitude of tourists you may have to wait a while. Be aware, however, that the result will reward you. If you're lucky, you might wind up with a golden-voiced singing boatman.
