The plane tree under which Hippocrates taught his pupils the art of medicine is located in a picturesque uphill square. Here lies a stone bridge, which is the entrance to the medieval castle of the Knights. Under the bridge passes the famous avenue of the Palms, a wide street with a rich tree alley. According to the tradition, the plane tree is 2.300 years old. However, it is very likely that this plane tree is much younger and that Hippocrates used to enjoy the shadow of the foliage of another, older plane tree, which was replaced over time by the present one. A special picture is created in the city center by the impressive cave on the trunk of the tree, the quiet that dominates the place and the waters that flow from the springs. Next to the plane tree is located a marble fountain with an inscription in Arabic, translated as following: “Gazi Hasan Pasha resurrected the fountain and water started flowing from the spring of Hippocrates in 1200”.
